Written Analysis 5

My article included theories of myths, stereotypes, heroes and formulas.   The theories that best relate to the article are heroes and stereotypes.   The characters of Xena, Buffy and Nikita are presented as heroes but treated as stereotypes.   There are many negative stereotypes of women as sexy super heroes.   They are portrayed as puppets of the male writer.   I was surprised to see that so many critics were accepting of these characters being portrayed this way.   During the popularity of these shows there was never any controversy or protest in the mainstream media.   The shows’ popularity soared among fans and critics.   It isn’t until recently that people have voiced opinion on the portrayal of female heroes in film and television.   Feminists are becoming more outspoken in the media and bringing focus on these types of characters.   With the creation of more female heroes there are more female characters being focused on a...

Written Analysis 4 Formulas

In the article about Xena, Buffy and Nikita the author discusses many concepts present in all three shows.   Formulas are used in all three shows in several ways.   The first formula in the three shows is the concept of an action adventure.   To have an action adventure the audience is entertained in a light-hearted way with an adventure that takes place by the characters.   Each episode starts with a problem, the action build-up to build suspense, finished with a solution that leaves the viewer wanting more of the same next week.                   The show Xena includes a formula with a buddy team. The characters of Xena and Gabrielle are teamed up as a permanent fixture that repeats on the show.   They solve the problems or cause the problems together.   They are ther...

Article analysis for group discussion

The following is an analyzation of the article: Frustrating Female Heroism: Mixed Messages in Xena, Nikita, and Buffy, by Mary Magoulick, 2006. While critics are happy with the strong female characters in Xena, Buffy and Nikita , the author believes these shows are more likely portraying the male fantasy stereotype of women characters.  Alienating feminists. Xena is an evil warrior turned good by the help of Hercules. Buffy is about a warrior who protects a small town from the forces of evil. Nikita is about a woman framed for murder who is given the choice of jail or becoming a government spy. Networks hope to lure women viewers with strong female characters.  But the writers catered to male audiences by making the sexualized women in male adventure roles. Many viewers saw these characters as a good start in the right direction of female heroes. The press of The Christian Science monitor and Good Housekeeping applauded these shows for their femal...

Written Analysis 3: Heroes and Celebrity in Xena, Buffy and Nikita

In the article I chose, the concept of females as heroes is discussed.   The three television shows of Xena, Buffy and Nikita all offer a female hero to the audience.   The characters of all three are strong women who champion the rights of others.   All three characters fight evil villains doing bad things.   The women role models who have moral and ethical values.   The three are intelligent, spirited, women fighters who are dealing with hostile and violent adversaries.   The females triumph continuously over adversity.   Each show has a strong female character who the show advertises as a hero and spends each episode justifying your support of her as a fan.       All three shows have had a large fan following.   The celebrity phenomenon can be seen in the way each of these shows still has fans even though they are long off the air.   People still watch these shows on platforms like Netflix. ...

Written Analysis 2 The stereotypes of Xena, Buffy and Femme Nikita

Written Analysis2                 There are stereotypes and rituals present in many television shows.   The shows Xena: Warrior Princess, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and La Femme Nikita contain many stereotypes.   All three shows are supposed to be stories of strong female characters.   These characters are meant to be role models for young women.   However, many negative stereotypes are included in these shows.   (Magoulick, 2006)                 The first show is Xena: Warrior Princess, which is a spin-off from Hercules the Legendary Journeys. The main stereotype is that only a good character can be the focus of a successful show.   The writers decided to turn Xena’s character around and redeem her into a hero instead of the villain she began as in Hercules. Xena was a warrior fighter character that th...

Written Analysis 1 The myth of Xena, Buffy and Nikita

Written Analysis 1 What theories seem to apply to your popular culture topic? Myth:   A strong female character needs to have a man to succeed as a female hero.   A strong female hero must be sexy and beautiful.   The female must have a male guiding her.     (Magoulick, 2006) . How do these theories describe, analyze or evaluate the topic you have selected?   Xena, the main character is considered evil until a male character, Hercules, shows her how to become a good person.   She cannot be happy unless she is violent and hostile in the show.   The men in her lives try to guide her decisions and her role as a warrior.   The show sort of skips over any female protagonist as just not strong enough to fighter Xena, because Xena was guided by men.   Even the possible lesbian love interest of Xena is downplayed because it may find resistance from male viewership.   The shows premise may be about a strong female lead, but it is pr...

Trust in Pop Culture Icons

Image
Trust in Pop Culture Icons Icons: Disney, Santa and Clowns I chose these 3 icons because they all symbolize trust.   Trust is put in these 3 icons by parents.   Parents trust each with their children, even to the point of blind trust. Children grow up believing these icons can be trusted.   I grew up thinking these 3 are safe and trusted.   As a child, I would have been thrilled to have any Disney character as a friend. I would trust clowns to give me candy. I would run to Santa and sit on his lap at Christmas.   Disney was a safe place I dreamed of going to live. Disney   Disney is a trusted brand.   Parents trust Disney to always have safe rides at their parks.   Their products are believed always safe for children (lead free). Parents don’t watch their children as closely at a Disney park because they believe their children are always safe there.   We even blindly trust Disney employees to be thinking of our best inte...
